The depth of the Divine mercy

I did not then see what is now the most shining and obvious thing: the Divine humility which will accept a convert even on such terms. The Prodigal Son at least walked on his own feet. Personal responsibility comes home

The USS Astoria was the first U.S. cruiser to engage the Japanese during the Battle of Savo Island, a night action fought 8-9, August 1942.

About 0200 hours Signalman 3rd Class Elgin Staples was swept overboard by the blast when the number one 8-inch gun turret exploded.  He was kept afloat by a narrow life belt that he managed to activate.

At around 0600 hours, Staples was rescued by a passing destroyer and returned to the Astoria, whose captain was attempting to save the cruiser by beaching her.  The effort failed, and Staples, still wearing the same life belt, found himself back in the water.  Picked up again, he was one of 500 survivors.

On board a transport, he closely examined the life belt that had served him so well.  It had been manufactured by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, and bore a registration number.

Given home leave, Staples asked his mother, who worked for Firestone, about the purpose of the number on the belt. She replied that the company insisted on personal responsibility for the war effort and that the number was unique and assigned to only one inspector.  Staples remembered everything about the life belt, and quoted the number.  It was his mother's personal code and affixed to every item she was responsible for approving.

Bill era un amico di mine nel seminario che era uscito a Cristo un lifestyle palesemente peccaminoso. Egli ha descritto in questo modo: "stavo guidando lungo la strada a bere una bottiglia di brandy con la moglie di un altro uomo al mio fianco. Quando ho visto alcuni cristiani sul marciapiede assistendo ai passanti di Cristo, ho guidato da e gridato, 'Sciocchi!' Ma solo un paio di settimane più tardi mi sono trovato in ginocchio in una chiesa e chiedendo a Cristo di diventare il mio Salvatore e Signore."Conversione di Bill ha portato nel suo rinunciare al suo vecchio modo e vivendo una vita nuova in Cristo. Bill was a friend of mine in seminary who had come to Christ out of a blatantly sinful lifestyle.  He described it this way:  "I was driving down the street drinking a bottle of brandy with another man's wife at my side.  When I saw some Christians on the sidewalk witnessing to passersby about Christ, I drove by and shouted, 'Fools!'  But only a few weeks later I found myself kneeling in a church and asking Christ to become my Savior and Lord."  Bill's conversion resulted in his giving up his old ways and experiencing a new life in Christ.  It was a life-changing turnaround.

True repentance, which is initiated by the Holy Spirit, includes a real turnaround.  Often we see that the greater the opposition to the gospel prior to conversion, the more stunning the change of direction afterward.  When Saul of Tarsus encountered Christ on the road to Damascus, he was changed from a persecutor to a preacher of the gospel.  Of this many observed:  "He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy" (Galatians 1:23).

Authentic conversion includes repentance, which is a change of mind and direction.  For the follower of Christ, repentance means to keep turning away from sin and turning toward Christ in obedience. -Dennis Fisher

Today's promise: God is merciful to us

Are you looking at God's mercy as a quick fix?

After giving instructions to completely destroy a town, including its people and livestock, should the people of Israel be enticed to turn to the worship of foreign gods? Moses tells the people: Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the Lord will turn from His fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as He solemnly promised your ancestors.

The Lord your God will be merciful only if you obey Him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to Him.

Deuteronomy 13:12-18 NLT

A sincere heart

These verses make it clear that God's mercy is extended to those whose hearts are sincere. The Israelites were headed for a land that, much like our society today, was infested with materialism, the craving of creature comforts and "the good life." God is not interested in sharing His mercy with those who simply need a quick fix for the problems their sinful lifestyles have created. Such people have no intention of accepting God's mercy as a new lease on life; they are simply looking for a way to save themselves from deserved consequences.

God wants to show us abundant mercy, but He is looking for those who will gratefully accept it and allow it to change the way they live. Do you want God's mercy as a quick fix or as a permanent new way of life?

FINO A QUANDO SEI PIENO

Un amico che vive a Singapore mi ha raccontato un vecchio saluto cinese. Invece di "How are you?"persone chiedere "Avete mangiato fino a quando sei pieno?" Il saluto di probabile originato durante un tempo quando il cibo era scarso e molte persone non sapevo quando avrebbero il loro prossimo pasto. Quando il cibo era disponibile, era consigliabile mangiare fino a quando erano pieni.

Dopo che Gesù miracolosamente nutrito di 5000 persone con cinque pani e due pesci piccoli (John 6:1-13), la folla lo seguiva che vogliono di più (vv.24-26). Il Signore ha detto loro di non lavorare per cibo fisico che bottino, ma "per il cibo che dura per la vita eterna, che il figlio dell'uomo vi darà....Io sono il pane della vita. Colui che viene a Me non deve mai fame e chi crede in Me non devono mai sete" (VV. 27, 35).

Come seguaci di Gesù, dovremmo aiutare coloro che mancano di nutrizione fisica adeguata. E con tutto ciò, possiamo condividere la buona notizia che la nostra fame di pace interiore, di perdono e di speranza può essere soddisfatto di conoscere Cristo Signore.

INSIGHT
In questo brano, Gesù stabiliti all'origine della nostra salvezza. La vita eterna è un dono che egli, come il figlio dell'uomo è autorizzato a dare (10.28; 17:2, vv.27, 51); non è qualcosa che si può lavorare per (6:28-29; Romani 06.23). Per ricevere la salvezza, l'unico "lavoro" che Dio ci richiede di eseguire è quello di "credere in [Gesù] che egli mandò" (John 06.29). Gesù ha anche detto che è volontà di Dio che chiunque crede in lui avrà la vita eterna (06.40). E l'apostolo Giovanni ci ha ricordato che Dio ha comandato di credere in Gesù ci (1 John 03.23). Rifiuto di Gesù è il rifiuto dell'opera di Dio, la volontà e la parola.

A friend who lives in Singapore told me about an old Chinese greeting.  Instead of "How are you?" people would ask "Have you eaten until you are full?"  The greeting likely originated during a time when food was scarce and many people did not know when they would have their next meal.  When food was available, it was advisable to eat until they were full.

After Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two small fish (John 6:1-13), the crowd followed Him wanting more (vv.24-26).  The Lord told them not to work for physical food that spoils, but "for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you....I am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst" (vv. 27, 35).

As followers of Jesus, we should help those who lack adequate physical nutrition.  And with all, we can share the good news that our hunger for inner peace, forgiveness, and hope can be satisfied by knowing Christ the Lord.

Jesus Christ, the bread of life, invites us to come to Him for His feast for the soul, urging us to eat until we are full. -David McCasland

INSIGHT
In this passage, Jesus set forth the origin of our salvation.  Eternal life is a gift that He as the Son of Man is authorized to give (vv.27, 51; 10:28; 17:2); it is not something one can work for (6:28-29; Romans 6:23).  To receive salvation, the only "work" that God requires us to perform is to "believe in [Jesus] whom He sent" (John 6:29).  Jesus also said that it is God's will that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life (6:40).  And the apostle John reminded us that God has commanded us to believe in Jesus (1 John 3:23).  Rejection of Jesus is rejection of God's work, will, and Word.

Preghiera di Abramo per misericordia

Nei giorni prima della loro sentenza ardente, i cittadini di Sodoma e Gomorra probabilmente non avevano idea che il loro vicino Abraham era agonizzante con Dio sul loro destino. Abramo vide la necessità di giustizia, ma ha anche pregato Dio per mostrare loro la sua misericordia. Egli ha chiesto a Dio di risparmiare la città per appena una manciata di persone giuste, e Dio ha accettato. Inoltre, Dio mandò il suoi angeli per proteggere la famiglia innocente di Lot e farli fuori pericolo. Abraham approached him and said, "Will you destroy both innocent and guilty alike? Suppose you find fifty innocent people there within the city — will you still destroy it, and not spare it for their sakes? Surely you wouldn't do such a thing, destroying the innocent with the guilty. Why, you would be treating the innocent and the guilty exactly the same! Surely you wouldn't do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?" [The Lord responds that He will not destroy the city. Abraham persists, reducing the number to 45, then 40, 30, 20 and finally ten]. And the Lord said, "Then, for the sake of the ten, I will not destroy it."

Abraham's prayer for mercy

In the days before their fiery judgment, the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah probably had no idea that their neighbor Abraham was agonizing with God over their fate. Abraham saw the need for justice, but he also begged God to show them His mercy. He asked God to spare the city for just a handful of righteous people, and God agreed. In addition, God sent His angels to protect Lot's innocent family and get them out of harm's way. But as Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction illustrates, there's a limit to His mercy, for the God of justice will not let sin go unpunished forever.

Just as He listened to righteous Abraham long ago, God will listen to your cries for justice and your pleas for mercy. In the end, God will do what is right.
